Krauma is a project Arnhildur Pálmadóttir collaborated on with Akkur Arkitektar. Krauma is a natural geothermal bath resort located at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. The layout of the bathing area is organic in contrast to the building’s geometric forms. The soft forms reflect the natural flow of water. When guests approach the area, the buildings are almost invisible in the landscape. The bathing area consist of differently heated or cooled hot tubs with hot water from the hot spring mixed with cold water from a small glacier close by, saunas and a unique tranquility room for meditation and relaxation. During the building process, soil and grass was excavated to make space for the construction. These natural materials were then re-used for roofs and support walls surrounding the buildings and the bath area. The result is a natural and modest look where the buildings blend naturally in with the surrounding nature.
